The Tarlac State University (TSU) Communication Department attended the first Pampanga Press Freedom Conference hosted by the University of the Assumption (UA) last September 27, held at the UA auditorium, composing morning and afternoon sessions.
Spearheaded by the UA Mass Communication Students Association with the theme “Not Generated: Impact of AI in the Evolving Media Landscape Amid the upcoming midterm elections,’ the theme addresses some pressing issues of disinformation and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism practices.
Rev. Fr. Oliver G. Yalung, the University President, formally opened the program with a welcome address, emphasizing that press freedom is the cornerstone of democracy.
Following him is Dr. Arnel T. Sicat, who shared some words that highlighted the event as a significant milestone for young journalists.
Furthermore, the conference featured some notable guest speakers. The morning session kicks off with Mr. Reiniel Pawid, a news reporter from the primetime news program of TV5 Frontline, who addressed the challenges journalists face against AI.
Mr. Pawid also elaborated the pros and cons of AI, recognizing it as both a threat to the workforce and an opportunity for media innovation. He also stressed the importance of authenticity in journalism and in the workplace, sharing essential phrases like "maging plastic" and "dedma factor."
Moreover, the afternoon session, headed by the second speaker, Mrs. Angelica Marie Simpao-Seño, illustrated the distinctions between television and radio broadcasting formats in script, reinforcing the diverse methods of delivering news to the public.
Followed by is Ms. Sarah Mae Lugtu, who shared her personal journey in podcasting.
Ms. Lugtu inspired students to pursue their passions, stating, "If you have the dream with you, eventually, there would be a result."
The conference concluded with a lively question-and-answer segment, where guest speakers provided valuable insights on enhancing journalistic skills while responsibly utilizing AI tools.
