“Fight the heat, you’re not alone.”
This powerful message resonated strongly among students as they carried out a humanitarian and development-driven initiative focused on public health awareness.

On May 20, 2024, Tarlac State University BA Communication 2B students, together with their faculty-in-charge Mr. Derich D. Bognot, spearheaded “COMMbat Init: A Heat Hazard and Health Concern Awareness Project” at Sapang Tagalog Elementary School. The activity gathered approximately one hundred students and faculty members.

The program opened with welcoming remarks from Officer-in-Charge Ms. Evelyn S. Villarico, who expressed appreciation for choosing their school as the venue. After the invocation and introductory messages, participants engaged in interactive and educational activities centered on preventing heat-related illnesses.

One of the highlights was the “COMMbat Init” game, a creative adaptation of a familiar activity where participants competed by shouting the word “Init” while sustaining the final syllable for as long as possible. Informative discussions and demonstrations were also conducted, including the segment “What’s In My Bag?” which presented essential items for protection against extreme heat.

In addition, BA Communication 2B students distributed informative posters around the campus to reinforce awareness of heat safety measures. The audience was further energized through a self-produced jingle titled “HOT TO GO!” featuring cheerleader-inspired choreography and lyrics crafted to make safety tips engaging and memorable.

The project concluded with the turnover of communication materials prepared by the class, including a 6x8 tarpaulin featuring Heat Safety Tips infographics, foldable fans printed with the message “Sarili ay paypayan, Init ng araw ay labanan,” remaining sticker materials, and a flash drive containing soft copies of all campaign outputs.

The school’s Principal, Ms. Vilma B. Cawigan, PhD, commended the efforts of the organizing team. The event formally concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), strengthening the partnership between the university and the school. Ms. Sadiya Rei Espino, class head of BA Communication 2B, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the initiative.
