Students from BA Communication 2B carried out their Development Communication Social Mobility (Dev Comm SocMob) project in Sitio Batson, Brgy. Sto. Niño, Bamban, Tarlac, last December 22, addressing one of the community’s most pressing concerns, the lack of access to electricity.
Sitio Batson remains one of the few communities in the area without a stable source of electricity. In response, the students distributed portable solar generators designed to help residents with basic daily needs such as charging mobile phones, powering electric fans, providing lighting, and supporting other small household activities. The initiative aimed to ease the burden brought by the absence of electricity and to improve the community’s overall quality of life.
According to the students, while electricity is the most urgent concern, Sitio Batson continues to face other challenges, including limited access to clean water, quality education, proper hygiene, and healthcare services. However, given their limited resources as students, the class decided to focus their efforts on a single but impactful issue.
The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and renewable energy solutions for underserved communities.
Roberto Luiz Macapagal, Soc Mob Head of BA Comm 2B, shared the emotional journey behind the project.
“Realistically speaking, nakakapagod at nakaka-drain. And that’s true. However, seeing the community happy and grateful sa kung anong naibigay namin, sobrang nakakataba ng puso,” Macapagal said.
“It was fulfilling. Banayad sa pakiramdam na makita ang klase na nagbunga lahat ng pagpapagal (pagpapagod), at banayad din na kahit na paunti-unti, nakakaangat ang Sitio sa kahirapan,” he added.
Through this initiative, BA Communication 2B demonstrated how small, sustainable actions can create meaningful change, reinforcing the role of students and future media practitioners in community development and social responsibility.
