Jose Rizal: Bayani ng Lahi — A GenEd Book on the Life and Works of Rizal

A learning resource that promotes nationalism, civic awareness, and a deeper understanding of the legacy of José Rizal.

The General Education Department of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Tarlac State University also features the book Jose Rizal: Bayani ng Lahi, a reference material developed for the course Life and Works of Rizal. The book aims to help students understand the importance of national consciousness and their role in shaping the future of the country.

Inspired by the goals of Republic Act No. 1425, also known as the Rizal Law, the book emphasizes the significance of studying the life, works, and writings of Dr. Jose Rizal as a means of strengthening patriotism among Filipino students. It highlights how learning about Rizal and other national heroes can inspire the youth to value freedom, responsibility, and service to the nation.

The material presents Rizal not as a perfect individual but as a young Filipino who developed his abilities and eventually dedicated his life to the love of country. Through this perspective, the book encourages students to realize that they too have the capacity to contribute to society and continue the ideals that Rizal stood for.

In addition to discussions about Rizal’s life and contributions, the book includes learning activities designed to deepen students’ understanding of nationalism, love for others, family, and self—values that are closely connected to genuine love of country. It also guides learners in reflecting on how Rizal’s ideas and actions remain relevant to their personal lives and responsibilities as citizens today.

The book was edited by leaders and faculty members from the GenEd Department, including Dr. Raffy S. Aganon, currently the Associate Dean and Chairperson of the General Education Department, Dr. Agnes M. Macaraeg, former Vice President for Academic Affairs and now part of GenEd, and Dr. Dexter L. Manzano, adviser of the Supreme Student Council at the university. Their collaboration reflects the department’s commitment to producing meaningful academic resources for students.

GenEd Department Releases Ethics Textbook for Moral and Social Understanding

A comprehensive Ethics reference designed to develop moral reasoning and responsible decision-making among students.

The General Education Department of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at Tarlac State University highlights one of its academic contributions through the publication of an Ethics reference book intended for students taking the Ethics course. The book serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding morality, ethical principles, and the role of ethical thinking in everyday life.

Grounded in the idea that human beings naturally reflect on what is right and wrong, the book introduces readers to fundamental moral questions about truth, goodness, virtue, and human responsibility toward others. It emphasizes that studying ethics is essential in shaping individuals who can make thoughtful and responsible choices in society.

Aligned with the standards set by the Commission on Higher Education through CMO No. 20, s. 2013, the textbook follows the prescribed outline of the Ethics course while expanding discussions to deepen students’ understanding of moral philosophies. It not only presents different ethical theories but also encourages critical evaluation of these perspectives to help learners form their own ethical standpoint.

The book also integrates contemporary teaching strategies, including e-learning assignments, curated online lectures, interactive quizzes, and opportunities for discussion, allowing students to engage with ethical issues in a more dynamic and meaningful way.

Notably, the publication underwent academic review by members of the university leadership within the General Education community, including the former Dean of the college—now part of the GenEd Department—and the University’s current Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), who also serves within GenEd. Their involvement helped ensure the quality, relevance, and academic rigor of the material.

Through this publication, the GenEd Department continues to contribute to the advancement of values education and the development of ethically aware and socially responsible learners.
