Psy 1A – Understanding the Self

This course explores the nature of identity and the different dimensions of the self from philosophical, psychological, sociological, and cultural perspectives. Students examine how personal experiences, social relationships, culture, and society shape one’s identity. The course encourages self-reflection and deeper awareness of one’s strengths, values, and goals, promoting holistic personal development.

SS 1C – Readings in Philippine History

This course provides students with a critical examination of Philippine history through the analysis of primary sources and historical narratives. It emphasizes the importance of evidence-based interpretation and challenges learners to understand historical events from multiple perspectives. Through this course, students develop historical consciousness, national identity, and appreciation for the country’s struggles and achievements.

SS 1D – The Contemporary World

This course examines globalization and its impact on political, economic, cultural, and technological systems worldwide. Students analyze current global issues such as migration, development, environmental challenges, media, and international relations. The course equips learners with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to understand interconnected global realities and their implications for the Philippines.

GElec 5 – Philippine Popular Culture

This course studies contemporary Philippine popular culture, including media, music, television, film, social media, fashion, and everyday practices. Students critically analyze how popular culture shapes identity, values, and social norms. The course encourages learners to evaluate the influence of mass media and cultural trends in shaping modern Filipino society.

SS 5 – Rizal

This course focuses on the life, works, and writings of José Rizal. Students examine Rizal’s contributions to Philippine nationalism and reflect on the relevance of his ideas in contemporary society. The course promotes patriotism, civic responsibility, and critical engagement with national issues.

PHL 1B – Ethics

This course introduces students to fundamental ethical theories and moral reasoning. It explores philosophical perspectives on right and wrong, justice, responsibility, and human dignity. Through case studies and discussions, students learn to apply ethical principles to real-life situations, enabling them to make sound moral decisions in both personal and professional contexts.

Through these courses, the Social Science Department nurtures socially conscious individuals who are equipped with analytical skills, historical awareness, and ethical foundations necessary for responsible citizenship.

Hum 1 – Arts Appreciation

This course introduces students to various forms of art, including visual arts, literature, music, theater, and performance. Learners analyze artistic works within their historical and cultural contexts, developing aesthetic sensitivity and critical understanding. The course encourages students to appreciate the role of art in expressing human experiences and shaping cultural identity.

ENG 3A – Purposive Communication

This course focuses on the development of effective written, oral, and digital communication skills. Students learn how to tailor messages to different audiences and contexts, applying communication principles in academic and professional settings. Emphasis is placed on clarity, coherence, critical reading, and responsible communication in the digital age.

GElec 1 – Public Speaking and Persuasion

This course develops students’ confidence and competence in public speaking. It covers speech preparation, organization, delivery techniques, and persuasive strategies. Through various speaking engagements and practical activities, students learn how to present ideas effectively, influence audiences, and communicate with clarity and conviction.
