The TSU 87.5 Firefox Radio aired its final special program for March, titled “Aral sa Tag-araw: Pag-iwas sa Posibleng Sakuna Dulot ng Sunog,” featuring SF01 Vibar Ryan Pallarca of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)–Tarlac City on March 27 at the TSU Radio Studio.

Pallarca discussed the agency’s Fire Prevention Month initiatives, including roadshows, art contests, and a kick-off ceremony, aimed at strengthening public awareness on fire safety.

He emphasized that early awareness is crucial, particularly among students, noting that basic practices such as proper use of electrical devices, avoiding fire hazards, and knowing emergency procedures can help prevent incidents. He added that communities must also develop discipline and shared responsibility in fire prevention.

“Awareness is our first line of defense against fire incidents,” Pallarca said.

He identified electrical-related issues as the leading cause of fires, including overloaded outlets, substandard appliances, and faulty or outdated wiring. He also cited open burning or “kaingin,” along with extreme heat and dry conditions during the summer season, as contributing factors.

Pallarca advised listeners to observe basic fire prevention measures such as ensuring electrical safety, practicing caution when cooking, and properly disposing of cigarette butts.

He also outlined appropriate responses during fire incidents, stressing the importance of staying calm and evacuating immediately. In manageable situations, he said individuals may use fire extinguishers if it is safe to do so; otherwise, authorities should be contacted immediately.

Pallarca warned against seeking refuge in restrooms during fires due to the risk of suffocation and reminded the public that emergency assistance can be reached through 911.

He added that the university can further promote fire safety through regular drills, seminars, and the use of social media platforms, while students can contribute by adhering to safety practices and encouraging others to do the same.

The program concluded with Pallarca urging the public to remain vigilant and proactive.

“Be alert, be responsible, and don’t take fire safety for granted. Fire doesn’t choose its victims, it can happen to anyone,” he said.
